| Celebration of UNESCO's International Mother Language |
On the occasion of the sixth edition of the International Mother Language Day, UNESCO February 21 a conference on linguistic diversity. The conference will be opened by Director General of UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura, Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, President of the General Conference, and Zhang Xinsheng, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Organization. The program (PDF format) Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, former President of the Republic of Iceland and Goodwill Ambassador of the Organization, Adama Samassekou, President of the African Academy of Languages, Vittorio Bo, President of Codice (Italy) and Daniel Prado, Director of the Department of terminology and language industries in the Latin Union, will participate in the discussions. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, which is the source of the documentary In Languages We Live - Voices of the World, directed by Jansen and Signe Billeskov Byrge Sørensen (Denmark 2005), will focus on the impacts of the disappearance of languages, subject of the film through several stories. The screening of the documentary will be followed by the presentation of various initiatives for the preservation of linguistic diversity. Vittorio Bo, exhibiting the "City of speech," a museum devoted to the languages that will soon see the day in Italy. This project is an initiative of Codice, a company that designs and manages projects of cultural research. Adama Samassekou present activities of the African Academy of Languages, recently established as an organ of the African Union (AU) and to prepare action plans at contains. The AU has declared 2006 the Year of African Languages. Daniel Prado will present the results of the survey on multilingualism recently conducted by the Latin Union, an institution dedicated to promoting the common heritage and identity of the Latin world. Day International Mother Language Day, celebrated every year on February 21, aims to promote the recognition and practice of mother tongues of the world and especially those of minorities.
