World Book Day

In several countries, speaking Spanish, like Cuba, this day is celebrated as the Day of the language than the International Day of Mother Tongue held on February 21. 
The election day April 23 as the day the book comes from the coincidence of the death of the writers Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega on the same date in the year 1616, but was not really on the same day Since the time of Shakespeare is the Julian calendar, which would be May 3 in the Gregorian calendar and Cervantes died on 22, being buried 23. It also coincides with the birthday of William Wordsworth (1850) and death of Josep Pla (1981). The proposal was presented by the International Publishers to UNESCO with the aim of promoting culture and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. On 15 November 1995 the General Conference of UNESCO adopted the proposal in Paris, from which the April 23 would be the "International Day of Book and Copyright."
Spain 
Alfonso XIII signed a royal decree on February 6, 1926 by which formally created the Spanish Book Festival to be held on the date which is then believed that he was born Cervantes on October 7. The original idea was writer Andres Vicent Clavel, to the House Official Book Barcelona. Soon after, in 1930, establishing a definitive date of April 23 as the Day of the Book. The root conclusion quickly spread to Barcelona and Catalonia, although the official purpose was slowly reduced to match the day of the patron saint, known as the Day of Saint George (St. George's Day), while other areas remained the party with minor or even disappear. Over time it was traditional in Catalonia and gift exchange roses and books between couples and loved ones on that date, becoming one of the most popular sessions were held. This tradition was one of the arguments used by UNESCO to declare April 23 World Book Day. [Citation needed] 
Spain takes into account the date for this year's Cervantes Prize, the highest award made to the authors Hispanics. 
Book Capital 
In 2001 at the initiative of UNESCO was appointed Madrid World Book Capital. Since then, every April 23, capitals of the world have been accepting this honor, made during various cultural activities related to books. In 2008 Amsterdam will occupy this position. 
Celebrations in other dates 
Some countries have similar events on other dates. UK and Ireland on the first Tuesday in March to conduct the so-called World Book Day (World Book).
