What Do I do

What Do I do?
by Herb Hanko

Sometimes when I meet people and they ask me what I do, I fall silent. I know they are being polite and they expect a short word in reply. This offers them the opportunity to raise their eyebrows, smile, and say !Ahhh, how interesting. With sufficient nodding of the heads and bright smiles we part.

I however do not know the one word that sufficiently describes what I do. As I am also a compulsive explainer I keep wondering if you really want to know and if you will hold still for a complete explanation. So I explain that I write interesting, educational, and witty articles on a vast range of subjects.
"Ahhhh", you say, "you are a writer." Well yes, but I also draw the pictures and cartoons to illustrate, and elaborate, the writings. After all a picture is worth a thousand words and it takes up much less space.
"Aha", you say, " you're an illustrator." Well yes, but I also scan the images and edit the Text and Graphic Files and put them together in a manner that draws people irresistibly to read my publications.
"Ah So", you say, and I can see a frown begining to form "you're a Desk Top Publisher !" Well yes, but I also take video recordings, and capture video-images on disk, and enhance these images to print them out as graphics.
"I see", you say, you say, as you are eying the nearest exit "you're an Image Editor." Well yes, but the messages so produced must be targeted towards a specific audience belonging to a distinct demographic profile.
"OK", you say as you are walking to the door " you're in marketing." Well yes, but I also have to design and maintain the Data Base to contain all those Names and Addresses to keep track of what was written to whom, and who to write what next.
"Mmmh", you say as you stand in the door for one last look back "that makes you a Data Base Manager". Well yes, but someone has to fold the paper and lick the stamps and stuff the envelopes.
"Ooooh", your voice reverberates in the hall outside the door "you're the mail clerk".
So, you see why I hesitate when you ask me what I do.
