Seventh Sense

The Seventh Sense
by Herb Hanko

Much has been said about the senses. Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, touching and equilibrium are what enables us to receive information from our environment. This information in turn enables us to make decisions and respond in an appropriate fashion.

Science has investigated each of these senses and we have a pretty good, though not complete understanding how they work. Essentially there exist a number of receptor cells throughout the body that are triggered by the presence of various stimuli. The stimulus can be waves as in the case of seeing and hearing or it can be molecules dissolved in liquid as in smelling or tasting. I know you will say that smelling does not involve liquids, but before you can smell something it must be dissolved in a thin film of liquid that coats the membranes of the receptor cells in your nose.
If enough receptor cells are triggered the signal is passed across the synaptic gap to the nerve cells of your neural network and is transmitted to your brain. Your brain processes the signal, and depending on which type of receptor sent it says : !Aha, I see, or I hear you, or !Oh no, it stinks".
As our modern society keeps changing the environment some of our senses may become obsolete, especially for city dwellers. After all does it really matter what kind of stink we are breathing in? I say we can do away with the sense of smell. Considering the proliferation of artificial foods and food additives we probably can also do without the sense of taste. After all the package says its gourmet food so we know we eat gourmet food; do we still need to taste it?
The sense of hearing is also grossly overvalued. After all, in traffic many people are using sign language already. Many a time I have seen myself the sign of the finger pointing up, although I never saw anything up there where the finger was pointing.
The sense of touch is also of questionable usefulness. Governments all over the world have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the sense of touch is not necessary for survival. If governments can govern while being totally out of touch with the people, and reality, why do the rest of us need this sense?
Of all the senses the one we most urgently need has been totally ignored. I am talking of course about our seventh sense. This sense is vital to the survival of the human species. Unfortunately this sense is underdeveloped in many people and no scientific study has ever been undertaken to explain its workings.
