In 1900 the empire had multi-culturalism, and bi-lingual money, but the nations kept squabbling themselves into a war. End of Empire. The new broom sweeps out the old currencies leaving the sweepers empty handed.
One day when Grandma was sitting in her farm high up in the Alps, his Excellency the Baron arrived, with a ![]() Bilingual two crown note 1908
My dear People: Due to the recently lost war, I resign. Karl IV PS.: All your money is now worthless unless exchanged immediately for new currency. The Baron then explained that the old bilingual Crowns were no longer good and he just so happen to have new Crowns in just one language. He offered to exchange it for the old silver and gold coins hidden under ![]() Silver Crown 1893 As was the custom every autumn, Grandma took her yearly trip down to the village to go shopping for the winter supplies. It is easy to imagine her surprise when pretty much everything she bought cost two or three times as much as last year. Well, if you'd paid with gold or silver you would pay the same as last year, the shopkeeper informed her. But the old money is no good any more Grandma protested. That is quite true, was the shopkeepers reply,"but the silver and gold is worth more now than an equal number of bills". So poor Grandma could only buy half the supplies that she normally would, and her family had to tighten their belts to survive the winter.
