ABOUT TERPENES

Terpenes are a naturally occurring class of molecules produced by the living tissue of plants. For example, terpenes occur in rubber, citrus fruits, lemon grass oils and coniferous trees. Beta-Carotene which is abundant in carrots, is a terpene and a building block of Vitamin A. In fact, several Vitamins belong to the terpene family. Terpenes are used in flavors, perfumes, deodorants and inhalants and now in solvents.

 1) Kari Butonal Value indicates the ability of a solvent to penetrate and remove oil/grease from substrate. The higher the KBV number the more solvent action is available. This value also indicates the ability of a solvent to hold soils in suspension without redepositing.

2) Viscosity - measured in centistokes per second; the lower the number the thicker the liquid. Water has 10 cps.

3) NVR - Non Volatile Residue left after drying.

4) Has since proven to be incorrect. According to the leading expert on VOC reactivity rates, Dr. William P. Carter, isoprene and terpenes are the most important biogenic VOCs in the formation of smog. Carter's work indicates that pinenes, the most common emissions from pine trees, are on par with toluene and ethyl benzene in their photochemical reactivity rates.
